Bert’s back.

And his performance as host of the annual TV logie Awards on Sunday night proved it.

So far so good is the message from critics after the veteran personality lit up another masterful performance for Australian audiences.

Hosting the event without a teleprompter, Newton was instantly at home, and provided laughs from the start.

“You like me, you really like me,” he said taking a quote from Sally Field’s infamous Oscars acceptance speech.

“Tonight we are able to pay tribute to the people behind our favourite TV shows – the comedians, the chefs and the criminals.

“This is number 19 for me at the Logies – I knew they’d come to their senses eventually,” Newton added.

Former Big Brother host Gretel Killeen was last year’s host, and came under mush criticism as she made headlines for the wrong reasons.

This year, however, it was a different story, the critics loved him.

“Bert brought a little class back to the show, working without a teleprompter and firing off a few trademark asides,” one website said.

“His sporadic appearances probably left the audience wanting more.

“Overall it was about reinstating tradition and it played that card very well.”

And even thought he ratings wer slightly down on previous years, nothing can be taken away from Bert on his night of nights.

He was used to chasing girls on our small screens, but now the girls will be chasing him.

That’s the news coming out of Australia today, after Firass Dirani was last night named the 2010 Cleo Bachelor of the Year.

For those of you who don’t know, Dirani plays the character of nightclub owner John Ibrahim in the latest series of Underbelly: The Golden Mile.

The crown was also seen as an early birthday present for the newly popular actor, with his 26th birthday being today.

The magazine said Firani typified everything the Cleo looks for in a perfect male and in the male they wanted to represent to the rest of the country.

It wasn’t exactly an ugly field either, Firnai had to edge out a bunch of AFL players, many surfers, TV and radio presents, other actors and high class professionals in their field of work.

More than 250,000 votes were cast, the most in the competition’s history.

Sunrise weatherman James Tobin was in second spot, with Jarod Green, the man behind the online cartoon sensation Beached Az, in third.

Dirani actually tipped celebrity chef Curtis Stone to take out the prize, but was over the moon with his announcement.

“It’s exciting. I’m happy just to be in the top 50, that was good enough for me,” he said.

“The whole thing is fun. It’s good to be part of things like this. It’s fun and games.”

Aussie teens are still coming to grip with ‘Bieber Fever’ after the 16-year-old singing sensation dramatically pulled out of his scheduled concert in Sydney on Monday.

The Canadian pop sensation was meant to be performing for the television show Sunrise, in front of a live audience, but things went pear shaped when crowd chaos kicked in.

It’s believed that when time neared for the singer to hit the stage, a stampeded began inside the crowd, full of young teenagers.

Unfortunately, eight teenagers were hospitalized during the event, one with a broken leg, and many others with bruises, and exhaustion.

Hundred of youths had to be carried over the main fence, fighting for breath as they collapsed to the ground in sweat.

For those of you who thought a young singer could not have caused such a dramatic event, think again.

Fans of this heartthrob are more than crazy, they are obsessed!

The frenzied crowd began to surge forward in the Circular Quay area, prompting police to cancel the event.

Many are still recovering from dehydration problems form the crowd and many have been emotionally scarred form far on the day.

In a Twitter.com post to fans, a disappointed Bieber sympathized with his fans, and apologized for the tragic event.

“I want to sing for my fans. I want to make this clear… I don’t cancel… I woke up this morning to the police canceling the show for safety reasons,” he tweeted.

Western Australia mother Lisa Hose is slowly coming to grips with her new title as Australia’s Biggest Loser.

The 41 year old mother of two went on the Channel Ten reality weight loss show last year in the hope of losing weight, being a better role model, and enjoying her life more.

As well as achieving all those things, she also made herself a little bit richer, pocketing $370,000 for being crowned the winner of the 2010 series.

Hose is officially the first ever female winner of the show and was announced last night in front of a live audience.

She entered the competition weighing a massive 121.9 kilograms, but through hard work, exercise and determination, she was able to shed 56 kilo’s to see her half the women she was once.

Hose now tips the scales at a remarkable 65.7 kilograms and has been absolutely blown away by the support she has received in the past 24 hours.

“All I ever wanted from The Biggest Loser was to get my weight off and be a better role model to my beautiful daughters and to make my husband proud,” Hose said.

“I could never have done it without the support of my trainer Shannan Ponton. Thanks to him, I am looking forward to a new beginning with my family.”

The education assistant, who works with disabled children, just pipped Queensland’s Joe Medway, 21, for the crown, who lost 82.7 kilograms to become runner-up in the closest final of the show’s history.

Gangland crime drama Underbelly has returned to our small screens for yet another installment of corruption, violence, sex and drugs, all twisted into a captivating plot.

It also seems to be a huge hit with the locals, with the premiere of the third series recording the highest rating TV debut of the year.

More than 2.2 million Australians tuned in to watch the first episode of Underbelly: The Golden Mile on Sunday night on the Nine Network.

About 200,000 viewers dropped off by the second episode, shown immediately after, but it still smashed all its competitors.

While it is clear the news series is to be a huge hit, it is still down on the success of last year’s series, which attracted almost 2.5 million viewers.

The news series is focused on Kings Cross in the late 80s and early 90s. it has a star studded line up including Natalie Bassingwaite, Dieter Brummer and sees the return of his character from Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities, and the silver haired George Freeman.

The new installment will also see a feature role for m Sigrid Thornton who plays the role of a stern, stylish hard-hitting police officer.

For those of you who don’t already know the setting of the Golden Mile is Kings Cross and one of the key protagonists is nightclub owner John Ibrahim.

Anyone with an interest in recent Sydney history will recognize the familiar names that crop up almost immediately such as Graham “Chook” Fowler, Trevor Haken, Bill Bayeh and Kim Hollingsworth.

Underbelly: The Golden Mile will continue screening Sunday at 8:30 on Channel Nine.

New Zealand born and Aussie raised Russell Crowe has cemented his place in Hollywood…. Literally!

The Oscar winning actor has been honoured with the 2404th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

His star will be situated next to fellow Aussie Nicole Kidman, Anthony Hopkins and Martin Scorsese, outside the Kodak Theatre, home of the Oscars.

A ceremony was held today to honor the moment, which was labeled ‘Russell Crowe Day’ by some officials.

A crowd of more than 500 were spotted wearing Crowe’s beloved South Sydney Rabbitoh’s jumpers and caps in the crowd, which included Sam Worthington, US talk-show host Jay Leno, director-producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer and Crowe’s wife Danielle and sons Tennyson and Charles.

Crowe was in awe of the moment, saying he will remember it forever.

“Thanks for the privilege. I’ll always be grateful for it,” he said.

With clouds coming over the Hollywood region, and rain threatening, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce decided to hold the ceremony under a tent.

But in an ironic twist of events the Los Angeles’ famed sunshine tried to break through as the star was unveiled.

Jay Leno joked that Crowe had sought divine intervention.

“It was pouring rain this morning and Russell Crowe made one phone call. The sun has come out,” he said.

It’s official, one of Australia’s greatest ever rock groups are breaking up.

Powderfinger have officially decided to called it quits on a decorated career, but not before one final tour of their homeland.

The band, led by Bernard Fanning, told a crowd of media in Sydney that they would hit the road on their biggest tour ever, before splitting.

A prepared statement made by Fanning read:

“The Sunsets tour will be Powderfinger’s last ever run of shows.

“We have decided, after much deliberation and agonizing, that after this final tour we will call it a day as a recording and touring band.

“With the completion of our last album, Golden Rule, we feel that we have said all that we want to say as a musical group.

“We firmly believe that it is our most complete and satisfying album and can’t think of a better way to farewell our fans than with music that we all believe in and also with, hopefully, our best tour to date.”

Their final ever tour will see them venture to 21 locations, covering each state and territory and will include hits form all of their seven feature albums.

The tour will begin September, and if it hasn’t already all bee sold out, we predict it probably will.

The bad has sold more than 2.5 million albums around Australia and have worked together for more than 20 years.

Fanning summed it up well with his final words.

“We have only come to this decision to disband following our run of festival shows this last summer and even toyed with the idea of delaying this announcement until our tour was over,” Fanning said.

“Finally we decided that it was much better mannered, and made a lot more sense, to give people the opportunity to come and celebrate with us as we make our way around the country one last time.”

Controversial Aussie actor Matthew Newton and Transformers star Rachael Taylor are officially engaged, after a passionate one-year relationship.

According to a well-known source, the Underbelly star popped the question to his blonde girlfriend earlier on in the year, to which Taylor immediately said ‘yes’.

“Quite a while ago now, almost two months maybe, but they are really happy,” the unnamed source said.

“She said yes straight away. The couple are known to be wild about each other and are rarely apart.

“They just understand each other. They are a really unique couple,”

It is believed that only friends and family knew about the announcement, but it should explode onto the media in the next few weeks as the pair try to cut a deal with a weekly magazine to feature the story.

It is reported that $50,000 is the leading bid, but the title of that magazine has not been revealed.

The pair has made headlines in the past year, mostly Newton, the only son of TV legend Bert.

Last year they were spotted in LA getting each other’s names tattooed on their wrists and made headlines again when a hotel room Newton was staying in was severely damaged.

It was booked under Taylor’s credit card, but Newton denied any allegations.

The engagement of the couple is a sign Newton has moved on from his previous dramas with Aussie actress Brook Satchwell, to whom he reportedly abused.
