Yesterday (20/07/09) singer Chris Brown posted a video on his website publicly apologising for his assault on singer Rihanna. The two-minute video of Brown explained that he wanted to speak up before but due to legal reasons he wasn’t able to. He repeatedly apologises for his actions saying that there are no excuses and that it was inexcusable. At one point he says, “I’m sad and ashamed about what happened…my mother and minister taught me better than that. I’ve let a lot of people down.”
On 7th Feb after a pre-Grammy award dinner at the Beverly Hills Hilton in California Brown and Rihanna are seen leaving in a Lamborghini, at 12.30am the police were called to a scene five miles away from the hotel and find a woman with “visable injuries.” At 6.30pm Brown hands himself over to the police. After pleading guilty to one count of assault with the intent of doing great bodily harm on 22nd June, Brown reached a plea deal in the assault case, he will serve five years on probation where he’ll have to check in with his probation officer every three months and 180 days in jail or equivalent of 1,400 hours “labor-orientated service.” He must also go to a domestic-violence counselling class for a year. Rihanna’s dad is reportedly unhappy with the sentence. Formal sentencing is set for 5th August.
In a statement issued during the trial it describes the attack; after finding a text message on Brown’s cell phone from “a woman who Brown had a previous sexual relationship with,” a verbal argument followed, then the physical attack. It describes Brown punching her numerous times, putting her in a head lock, restricting her breathing and causing her to start to lose consciousness. It says he threatened to “beat the s-t out of you” and kill her, and also bitting her ear and her fingers.
His final words in his video are, “I want to live my life so that I’m truly worthy of the term role model.”
