Channel ten have today angered thousands of Australians with news they have signed disgraced AFL star Wayne Carey for the upcoming football season.

The former North Melbourne skipper will fill the void left by Robert Walls in the OneHD weekly show, One Week at a Time.

The news comes less that two years after he was arrested in Miami for an assault charge.

His temporary role with the network is also expected to be expanded into a full time position, with network producers interested in working with the disgruntled talent.

One group that is not happy with the news is Carolyn Worth from the Victorian Centres Against Sexual Assault, who says the signing sends the worst possible message to young men who see footballers as role models, and to women who have been victims of assault

“Do the networks have any standards,” she said.

“It is like they have an arrogant disregard for community standards.

“Basically what the networks are saying is that if at some point you have been a sports star or famous you can get away with anything, but generally if that was a woman it would destroy their career.”

Since the fallout from the famous arrest, Carey had publicly apologized for the incident and has recently broken up with former girlfriend Kate Neilson.

He has also admitted to a drug addiction and has been trying to ‘get back together’ with his family.

Channel Ten’s head of football, David Barham, said the football world wanted to have Carey back.

“We are doing a football show. I think everyone wants to see Wayne Carey on a football show,” Mr Barham said.

“It will be fantastic to have him back on TV, and we are rapt to be able to do it. Everyone is keen to listen to what Wayne has to say.”
